Public radio and NPR continue to gain audience in Iowa and throughout the country. As a medium, public radio is being discovered by new listeners and not forgotten by the established listeners.
The National Scene
Within the last 3 years, the audience to NPR programming has increased by more than 6 million listeners, an increase of 45% (NPR Audience and Corporate Research, 2002).
Within the last 5 years, the audience has increased 60% (NPR Audience and Corporate Research, 2002).
NPR's audience exceeds the combined circulation of the top 42 daily newspapers in the US (NPR Audience and Corporate Research, 2002).
Morning Edition and All Things Considered each draw a larger weekly audience than any of the individual nightly network newscasts (Nielsen Media Research/Associated Press).
The Central Iowa Scene
WOI-AM is at an all-time high in the metro with 31,900 listeners and WOI-FM draws a weekly audience of 34,300 (Arbitron, Spring 2003).
During the Spring 2003 pledge drive, WOI gained more than 500 new members (DonorCentrics, 2003).
WOI's core FM audience spends almost 15 hours a week listening and our core AM audience spends more than 12 hours a week listening (Arbitron, Fall 2002). |
