More About the WOI Radio Group

Thank you for your interest in underwriting on the WOI Radio Group and visiting our website. Let me provide a little background about WOI and underwriting.

WOI is a heritage broadcast entity licensed to Iowa State University. AM 640 was licensed in 1922 and started a regular broadcast schedule on April 28, 1922, but our history dates back even further. Experimentation with the new broadcast medium started in 1912. For many Iowans, WOI has been a companion in homemaking, agriculture news and music for the last 80 plus years. In 1949, WOI-FM started broadcasting. In the 1960's, the overall format of the stations was established as WOI-AM broadcasting news and information and WOI-FM broadcasting primarily classical music. We added KTPR in Fort Dodge in 2000 and KWOI in Carroll in 2002. All of our stations are operated as non-commercial educational radio stations.

Underwriting is the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) designation of business support of non-commercial educational radio stations. The rules governing underwriting require that we acknowledge this support. But, the rules also restrict how we can make these acknowledgements. The major consideration in underwriting is that it is a gift and not paid advertising. As you review the information on this website, I hope you will be able to recognize and understand these regulations.
